Water and Sanitation

The Clean Water for Rural Communities (CWRC)

Even though access to water in Ghana has improved significantly, nevertheless in some communities in the Volta Region, these services continue to be a luxury for large parts of the rural population. This also is reflected at schools in most of the communities. Many educational institutions do not have tap water or any sanitary installations. According to Unicef, one person out of every ten has to spend more than 30 minutes to access an improved source of drinking water. Another 11 per cent of the population, still drink from surface and other unsafe water sources(Unicef). The 6th goal of sustainable development is to ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Our Clean Water Project(CWP) aims to contribute to achieving universal and equitable access to safe drinking water for all through improved health and well-being in rural communities in the Volta Region by increasing water supply and sanitation access and the adoption of good hygiene practices in an equitable and sustainable manner. The goal of the project is to contribute, in

partnership with other development agencies, to improving water   quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials.

     Objectives;

  • Raise awareness and provide training/education on water consumption and water pollution and their impact on health.
  • Promote the use of good water treatment methods to treat drinking water at the point-of-use in order to reduce vulnerability of children and mothers, as well as the rest of the family members to water borne disease and other infectious diseases.
  • Encourage Community initiatives for WASH activities.
  • Generate demand for sanitation facilities in schools and communities.
  • Provide or Expand borehole systems or pipe water for communities with inadequate capacity
  • Provide excellent and portable toilet facilities for communities.

The Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (APS)

Our Rural Savers Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability Program aimed at encouraging inclusive economic growth and poverty reduction in poor rural communities in the Volta Region through experience-sharing, access to market, networking and mentorship, as well as access to tools and training. The project will address the major needs of small producers, women and youth who have little or no access to land or producing a bare subsistence minimum on household lands, small or medium scale farmers, and the rural underemployed.

     Objectives;

  • To promote resilient and sustainable production systems, as well as high national value production.
  • To partners with exporters and local buyers to expand market access for farmers.
  • Promoting production of diverse, nutrient-rich crops and improving processing, storage and preservation to reduce seasonality and post-harvest loses.
  • To educate farmers on productive and climate smart agriculture best practices.

The Climate Change School Project brings a proactive and efficient approach to climate action. This project promotes the participation efforts of communities to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Our work includes a range of adaptation and mitigation activities that strengthen communities’ ability to prepare for, recover from and adjust to the impacts of climate change without compromising long-term prospects. Our climate action work addresses the urgent, cross-cutting nature of climate change by combining innovative solutions with traditional knowledge to build resilient communities.

Rural Savers LGB partner with local communities, schools, universities, and others to mitigate and adapt to climate change by supporting communities as they engaged in;

  • Food production or Agricultural production.
  • Building community-centered approaches to addressing unique vulnerabilities and mitigation opportunities.
